History of the Department
The department of Economics was established in 1984, the same year as the S.B Deorah College. Economics was offered as a subject in both higher secondary and undergraduate courses. Pratim Adhikari was the founder teacher of the department and was assisted by a part-time teacher Pradeep Talukdar. Dijumani Goswami joined the Department in 1987. Major course of the department was started in the year 1994. At present, the department has a faculty strength consisting of three sanctioned post and an Assistant Professor on a contractual basis.
The Department is a well-knit community of accomplished and highly committed teaching faculty with a vibrant group of students. The department in its endeavor towards harmonizing excellence draws strength from the teaching learning process where the faculty feels privileged to collaborate with the young scholars. All the teachers are dedicated and put in relentless effort to bring out the best in the students. The students have excelled in University examination by securing first-class and secured the best graduate rank of Gauhati University.
The Department has distinguished Alumni conducting higher studies. A 2008 graduate from the department has obtained his Ph.D from the University of Sussex in 2016. Some others are engaged in Banks, government offices as well as public and private sectors. Bahniman Das who passed out in 2020 with a First Class in Economics honours has been selected for the PG programme in Business Analytics at Aston University, U.K.
