The Department of Botany was established in the year 2018 by introducing B.Sc. as self-financed programme under Gauhati University. It was started with just 8 students and 1 contractual teacher Dr Karabi Devi.After Karabi Devi, 2 new contractual teachers Ms Kashmita Ojah and Dr Anuradha Das provided the service to the department. It was provincialized in the year 2020 by Government of Assam, creating three sanctioned three posts for Assistant Professors in the Department. Accordingly, Dr. Deepanwita Deka, Somir Warisa and Kashmita Ojah were inducted as Assistant Professors in the department against the three sanctioned posts. At present the department has grown to accommodate 75 students in its B.Sc. programme. The Department offers both Honours and Regular courses to students. The Department is housed in a building with two well equipped laboratories. The Department has started to construct a Departmental Botanical garden including some medicinal and ornamental plants.

Mission
Impart quality education in the field of plant sciences & to sensitize students towards the need for conserving natural resources and sustainable development.

Objectives:
The course introduces students to the importance of plants as an integral part of existence on the planet. It is imperative to internalise fully the fact that human existence depends on plants and hence, the necessity to conserve nature is the need of the hour. A few activities are conducted at the end of the each semester which are relevant to the topics covered. Algal collections, mushroom cultivation, visits to tissue culture labs, plant collection trips, project works, maintenance of plant diversity on campus are few of the activities. These activities enable the students to study the subject outside the classroom environment.
