a) History of the Department:

S .B. Deorah College was established in 1984. The Education Department was also started in the same year. Dr. Malaya Barman was the first Head of the Department. Initially it was started for Higher Secondary and Degree pass course. In the year 1996 the major course was introduced.
At present the Department is headed by Mrs Ajanta Saikia with three faculty members and one laboratory Assistant. The teachers of the department render their valuable service towards various curricular, co-curricular and developmental activities of the college.

The faculty members are:

Mrs. Ajanta Saikia, Associate Professor,
Dr. Rumamani Deka , Associate Professor,
Mr. Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Professor
Sri Ramani Nath, Laboratory Assistant.

i. One of the senior teachers of the Department Dr. Bandana Baishya has served as the Co-ordinator of the IQAC from 2012 for three years.
ii. Mrs. Ajanta Saikia has completed her B.Mus. degree and she guides the students in various cultural programe organized by the college.
iii. Dr. Rumamani Deka, has successfully completed one minor research project in the year 2016 funded by UGC. She is currently serving as the Programme Officer of NSS unit of the college.
iv. Mr. Sajidur Rahman has published a number of textbooks. He has also prepared study materials for HS course under AHSEC and for UG and PG courses under GU, KKHSOU, IDOL and NEHU. He has prepared Study material for TET and APSC. The NSS unit of the college along with Education Department has started a Counselling Centre in March, 2022. Mrs Nimi Borgohain, Chief Clinical Psychologist, GNRC Hospital visited the counselling centre, teachers of the department also offer counselling service to the students as and when required.
A Departmental Book Bank has been launched from the year 2022. Old books on the subject Education are collected from the Students and are distributed among the needy students The Department organizes Handicraft Exhibition cum Sale during the College week in every Year.

Departmental Library – Education Department has its own Library with a good number of Text and Reference books, which is used by both teachers and students. It has a well-equipped psychological laboratory where we can accommodate 20 students with honours in Education for conducting psychological experiments.

In the year 2015, the department had organized an UGC sponsored national seminar on “Environment and Civil Society: Issues, problems and remedies”. A proceeding volume was published which was edited by Dr. Rumamani Deka.
Some of the remarkable activities organized by the department every year are teacher’s Day, Parent-Teacher Meet, Field Trip, Class-room seminar, Group Discussion. Quiz, Handicraft exhibition, Book-fair etc
The First class holders in B.A. Final examination are encouraged by offering Certificates and a trophy.
A wall magazine named “Anwesha” and a news letter name “The Educare” are published by the department.
The departmental students actively participate in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities. They begged the Second Best Team in the cultural rally competition organized by the college as a part of college week in the years 2021 and 2022.

Aims and Objectives of the Department :
The aims and objective of the Department of Education is to provide instructions in the subject of Education as per curriculum of Gauhati University and also to guide the application of knowledge in their life with dissemination of knowledge their off. The Department also shares knowledge base information , dissemination, importance of education, sanitation and other Socio- cultural and economical aspects among the students .

Mission and Vision of the Department :
The Mission and Vision of this Department is for providing the best education to our students so that they can able to contribute to the society with their acquiring knowledge during their student life . It helps to bring a bridge between the acquired knowledge and the community at large .
MISSION
Provide an environment through learning process for all-round development of students. The department tries to provide best possible education to the students by developing the knowledge , attitudes and essentials Skills .
Impart education of the highest standard through value based holistic teaching and learning by integrating traditional and innovative practices:
i) Create a platform for students for exploring their creative potential
ii) Imparting a good knowledge on human rights and ethical knowledge in order to make them socially responsible citizens.
iii) Provide inclusive education for promoting quality, transparency, compliance and sustainability in society
VISION
The department tries their best to provide the highest quality education to students for promoting intellectual growth , personal development. This will cater to be a socially responsible citizen for contributing in building a healthy society and nation at large .
