Department of Political Science was started from the very beginning of the S B Deorah College that is from 1984.The founder teachers of the department were Prof Late Pratul Chandra Nayak and Dr Sewali Mahanta. Pratul Nayak a regular teacher of B. Barooah College provided honorary service to this department of S.B. Deorah College. Later, Dr Nabanita Bhuyan joined in the year 1989, Dr Lily Goswami and Dr Tripti Rekha Baruah in 1993 and 1998 respectively. At present the department has four permanent faculties . They are Dr Tripti Rekha Baruah, Dr Jamini Buragohain (starting in December 2019) and Ms Chinmoyee Das (starting in January 2020) and Dr Dewajit Kalita .
Honours course of the department was introduced from 1996 and the first batch appeared the final examination in 1999. Right from the beginning department has been performing very well. It has produced more than 300 Honors Graduates. Faculty members have always made an effort to support overall growth of the students. Numerous accomplished lawyers, government employees, bankers, lecturers, teachers, journalists, and other public servants are current alumni of the department. The Department of Political Science produced the best graduate of the college for seven years in a row, from 2013 to 2020. With the commitment of the professors and the sincerity and honesty of the students, it has been able to thrive for the past 27 years. There has been always a cordial and friendly relationship between the students and the teachers. Alumni of the department are also maintaining a good relationship with the department and are extending their help and support whenever required.

Aims and Objectives : The primary goal of the department is to create morally upright successful human beings. Thus, to impart good education is the first objective of the department as good education is very essential to realize the self and to develop one’s own personality. Secondly to Sproduce good citizens. To become a good citizen, knowledge of Political Science helps to a great extent. Thus, the department has been working to teach the students about the theoretical and practical aspects of politics, administration, and social justice to help them to comprehend their rights, obligations, and responsibilities as good citizens towards the country.

Mission and Vision:
Mission of the department endeavors to generate new knowledge & produce students who are trained in Political Science. It also aims to impart training to the students in order to equip them academic and professional capability and develop among them analytical perspective and also to encourage research in social and political issues which will contribute to the discipline of Political Science. As the subject of Political Science helps to understand and learn the values of good citizenship and responsibilities of a good administrator and provides deep knowledge of administration, the mission of the department is to produce good citizens and administrators. Secondly Political Science helps to pursue higher studies in some subjects like Law, Public Administration, International Relation and also to appear competitive examinations like Civil Service.
