Profile

History of the Department
The Department was established in the year of 1984 to offer education of Higher Secondary course only. After few years of inception of the department, General Course was introduced and Major Course (at present Honors) in U.G. programme was started since the year 1995. Noted novelist and professor of B.Borooah College, Late Jogesh Das was the founder teacher (honorary) of the department. Founder principal of the college Mr. Paban Baruah, Professor of Cotton College (presently Cotton University) and Mr. Umesh Sharma, subject teacher of Ulubari Higher Secondary School also offered their honorary service for the progress of the department of the college.
Dr. Niranjan Kalita joined as Assistant Professor in 1988.Thereafter Mr. Jnanedra Kalita , Dr. Bibha Rani Pathak, Mrs. Gitali Das and Dr. Mamun Kalita joined as Asssitant professor in 1990, 1993, 1993 and 1997 respectively. At present there are five permanent faculty members in this department. Dr. N. Kalita opted voluntary retirement on February, 2020 after his nomination as a member of Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and Mr. Jnanendra Kalita retired on June, 2020. Ms. Sanjukta Baruah and Mr. Arnab Sarmah joined as Assistant Professor against the vacancies of Dr. Niranjan Kalita and Mr. Jnanendra Kalita respectively on December 30, 2020.
The performance of the students in Major course is very good from the year of its inception of this department. Many students of the department got first class. Students are very active in cultural field also. They have been participating in various cultural areas like music, dance, art and craft etc. By participating and winning various prizes in Youth Festival, organized by Gauhati University, the students of the department have made the department as well as the college proud.

Aims and Objectives
Being one of the oldest departments of the college, the Department of Assamese has been working for the all-round development of the students from the time of its inception. The aims of the department are –
a) To focus on the study of the Assamese language, literature and culture.
b) To impart knowledge of Assamese language, literature and culture to the students and encourage them to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
c) To encourage the students to undertake various research projects so that they can explore various spheres of this domain.
d) To produce such human resource who is well versed in Assamese Language. They are expected to contribute for the development of the Language and promote and propagate the values and traditions of Assam and its people.

Objectives
a) To develop and promote the Assamese language, literature and culture.
b) To impart knowledge of Assamese language, literature and culture.
c) To ensure that the students have a comprehensive understanding of the Assamese language, including both the structural and historical aspects.
d) To promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
e) To increase the knowledge of the students on Assamese language, literature and culture by organizing various seminars, workshops, literary quiz, essay writing competitions etc.
Mission & Vision
The Department of Assamese has its mission to enable students towards a broad understanding of literature, language and culture of Assam. The department tries to inspire the students to become a good human being. By acknowledging the language, literature and culture of Assam, the students can give value to their lives and the society.

Departmental Publications
In order to amplify the capabilities of the students, the department has been working with dedication. In this connection the Department of Assamese has published books, journals etc. in recent years. The details have been furnished below –
1. ‘Satsari’ – The departmental wall magazine is prepared by the students of sixth semester and has tradition of inaugurating on the day of Departmental Freshers.
2. ‘Sadhana’ – It is a hand written magazine prepared by students prepared by the students of fourth semester every year.
3. Bhasha Sahitya Sanskritir Alokrekha – A collection of critical essays on Assamese, Language, Literature and Culture edited by Dr. Biva Rani Pathak and published by the Department of Assamese, S.B. Deorah College on October, 2015
4. Axamiya Upanyaxar Bichar-Bislexan - A collection of critical essays on Assamese Novels, edited by Dr. Biva Rani Pathak and published by the Department of Assamese, S.B. Deorah College on June, 2023

Departmental Library
The department has a well maintained library with more than 300 books and journals. The students and faculties can borough books from the departmental library.

Course Offered and Intake
The department of Assamese has been offering courses of to both Honours and Regular students in UG level. The department has 25 seats in Honours course.

Alumni of the Department
Being one of the oldest departments of the college, the department of Assamese has a strong association of Alumni Students. The department organized Alumni Meets on 25/05/2019 and 04/09/2019. The alumni also contributed for all-round development of the department. On 20/03/2023, some of the alumni students donated books to the departmental library.
